How to Make Cash: “Destination” Times Two

final_destination_photoNot much to choose from as far as new movies go this weekend, so not surprisingly, The Final Destination came in on top for the second week in a row. Inglourious Basterds also held strong for another week in second place.

Here is the top five at the box office this weekend:

1. The Final Destination (Warner Bros.) – $15.4 mil; 3,121 theaters; $4,949 PT; $50.5 mil cume
2. Inglourious Basterds (Weinstein) – $15 mil; 3,358 theaters; $4,476 PT; $95.2 mil cume
3. NEW! All About Steve (Fox) – $13.9 mil; 2,251 theaters; $6,175 PT
4. NEW! Gamer (Lionsgate) – $11.2 mil; 2,502 theaters; $4,476 PT
5. District 9 (TriStar) – $9 mil; 3,139 theaters; $2,867 PT; $103.2 mil cume

Newcomers Steve and Gamer didn’t fare quite as well. Guess no one was as interested in Sandra Bullock as a goofball stalking a news cameraman or Gerald Butler as a prison inmate being manipulated in a bloody multi-playing online game environment. Wonder why? (wink, wink)

This coming weekend isn’t much more engaging, I’m afraid. There’s the horror flick Sorority Row, which looks like another version of I Know What You Did Last Summer; the thriller Whiteout, starring Kate Beckinsale as a scientist dealing with murder in the frozen Arctic; Tyler Perry’s next effort I Can Do Bad All By Myself; and finally the dark but highly imaginative animated film 9 (not to be confused with District 9 or the musical Nine, coming out in November). Watch the trailer and see what I mean:

I’m pretty sure Tyler Perry will win out once again because that’s what he does: opens big.
