How to Make Cash: Ist “Bruno!”

sacha-baron-cohen-as-bruno-de-2179964I had a feeling the notorious-ness of Bruno might bring moviegoers in, hence the reason it took the box office this weekend with $30.4 million. But the drop-off between opening day Friday and the rest of the weekend means this shock comedy could just be a curiosity to folks – and nothing more.

Here is the top five list at the box office this weekend:

1. NEW! Bruno (Universal) – $30.4 mil; 2,756 theaters; $11,040 PT
2. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Fox) – $28.5mil; 4,102 theaters; $6,948 PT; $120.5 mil cume
3. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Paramount) – $24.2 mil; 4,293 theaters; $5,637 PT; $339.2 mil cume
4. Public Enemies (Universal) – $14.1 mil; 3,336 theaters; $4,230 PT; $66.5 mil cume
5. The Proposal (Buena Vista) – $10.5 mil; 3,158 theaters; $3,327 PT; $113.7 mil cume

The other newcomer this weekend, I Love You, Beth Cooper, only placed seventh with $5 million, which makes sense since the movie isn’t at all good (hence the one really bad review I’ve given so far this summer).

Of course, this coming weekend is no contest. It’s all about Harry. I’m just hoping Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince beats Transformers in its opening numbers because, well, I’m competitive that way and Harry deserves it. I already reported on how much critics are liking it, so with a good word of mouth and an anticipatory fan base, all signs point to big BIG box office numbers.

Oh, if for some reason you feel compelled to see another movie this coming weekend, you can also check out what I hear is a very sweet and romantic flick called (500) Days of Summer, starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Leavitt, opening in a limited release. Here’s the trailer:
