How to Cast: A-List Lesbians

annette and julianneThere is not one but TWO movies coming up involving lesbian couples, played by some Oscar-caliber actresses. First, Variety reports Annette Bening and Julianne Moore are starring in The Kids Are All Right, a comedy in which they play a couple whose two children (Journey to the Center of the Earth‘s Josh Hutcherson and Alice in Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska) decide they want to meet their sperm-donor father (Mark Ruffalo), who then disrupts their family dynamic. Then, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker team up for a road-trip comedy called Cloudburst, in which they play a couple, together for 30 years, who break out of a nursing home and head to Canada to get married, picking up a young male hitchhiker along the way. Does anyone else think two movies about same-sex marriages with high profile talent is profoundly cool?

In other casting news: Amy Adams gets her fight on. According to the Reporter, she’s in negotiations to star with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in David O. Russell’s The Fighter. The real-life boxing drama centers on the early days of boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his trainer half-brother Dick Eklund (Bale), who had a drug problem but helped his bro win a world championship. Adams plays a feisty (she’s all about that these days) bartender who dates Mickey, while Oscar-nominated Melissa Leo (Frozen River) plays the boys’ mother. The fact this is being directed by the usually quirky Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) is what intrigues me the most.

So, THIS is why we’ve been seeing Drew Barrymore hanging out with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Justin Long recently. They are starring in a new romantic comedy together, Going the Distance, playing a couple who try to maintain a long-distance relationship. I sure hope there’s more to it than just that. Christina Applegate is set to play Drew’s sister, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Charlie Day is Justin’s best friend.
