How “Wolverine” Slashed the Box Office … But Not for Long

xmow-2531By being Wolverine, of course, the first major blockbuster to open this summer. It’s not at all surprising it would win the box office this weekend with a healthy $87 million domestic take, but some speculate it could have gotten more if the film hadn’t been leaked online a month ago. I highly doubt it. Most fans are going to want to see the action on the big screen. It’s kinda like opening your Christmas presents before Christmas.

Here are the top five movies this past weekend:
1. NEW! X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Fox) – $87 mil ($21,225 per theater)
2. NEW! Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (WB) – $15.33 mil ($4,827 PT)
3 . Obsessed (Screen Gems) – $12.20 mil ($4,853 PT); $47 mil cume
4. 17 Again (New Line) – $6.36 mil ($1,952 PT) ; $48.50 mil cume
5 . Monsters vs. Aliens (Dreamworks Animation) – $5.80 mil ($2,209 PT); $182.40 mil cume

As it stands, Wolverine probably won’t be able to keep up the momentum, especially since Star Trek is opening this week. Like I said before, I think the ST opening is going to be MASSIVE (over $100 mil, for sure) and will only continue to grow as time goes on with its repeat business. It’ll most likely beat Angels and Demons, which opens the following week, but will find stiff competition the week of May 22 with Terminator: Salvation and Night at the Museum 2. Still, ST should be a big success story this summer.
